State agencies are reacting after President Trump signed an executive order that could reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug.

The executive order expedites the rescheduling of marijuana from a schedule one drug to a schedule three drug.

It does not change criminal penalties for marijuana possession or expand access for recreational use. But it does increase medical marijuana research.

The Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board says the research aspect is big for the state.

If rescheduled at the federal level, they also anticipate large impacts to taxes and banking with cannabis related businesses.

"It truly shows kind of the intention to start this rescheduling process. So, for us, this is the next domino to fall, so we can really start looking at this," said James Humm, Executive Director, Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board, "And then again, at the state level, have clarity on what they want to do at the federal level."

The UNLV Cannabis Policy Institute also said the order brings federal drug policy more in line with Nevada's.
