The Reno community is mourning the loss of Master Police Officer Lance Tindell, whose 18 years of service with the Reno Police Department left a lasting mark on the people he served and the department he called home.
The City of Reno and Reno Police Department announced the passing of Master Police Officer Tindell, recognizing his dedication to public service and commitment to the Reno community throughout his career.
“Master Officer Lance Tindell’s life and service will forever be woven into the fabric of the Reno Police Department,” said Reno Police Chief Corey Solferino. “He met danger with resolve, pursued violent offenders with unwavering determination, and devoted himself to making our community safer. Yet beyond the badge, Lance will be remembered for his humor, his compassion, and the genuine care he showed his peers, his family, and every person he served. His loss serves as a reminder that our time is not guaranteed – we need to live each moment as if there is no tomorrow – Lance embodied that in the lives he protected, the colleagues he inspired, and the community he helped make better. We grieve his passing, honor his memory, and celebrate a life of courage, purpose, and devoted service.”
Tindell began his career with the Reno Police Department in 2008 as a patrol officer. During his career, he served in specialized assignments including the Downtown Enforcement Team, Crime Suppression Team, and as one of the original members of the Regional Crime Suppression Unit.
He also served as a detective with the Repeat Offender Program, where his work focused on identifying, investigating and apprehending violent and repeat offenders to help keep the Reno community safe.
During his career, Master Police Officer Tindell played an instrumental role in apprehending more than 50 homicide suspects, recovering more than 1,000 firearms that had been stolen or used in crimes, and seizing thousands of pounds of illegal narcotics.
His dedication and service earned him numerous commendations, including the rank of Master Police Officer in December 2023. The honor is one of the department’s highest and was awarded through recognition and a vote from fellow officers.
Beyond enforcement work, Tindell served with the Community Action Office, where he focused on addressing community concerns and connecting people in need with resources and support. He also served as a negotiator with the Critical Incident Negotiation Team, helping resolve critical incidents with compassion, patience and professionalism.
Tindell was known for making people feel seen and heard, whether he was helping a victim through a difficult moment or supporting a fellow officer. He was also known for his sense of humor and ability to bring positivity to difficult days, making him a valued colleague, friend and mentor within the Reno Police Department.
“Master Police Officer Tindell dedicated his career to serving the people of Reno with professionalism and care,” said Reno City Manager Jackie Bryant. “He made a lasting impact not only through his service, but through the relationships he built, the officers he mentored and the compassion he showed our community. He led with strength, integrity, humility and a generous heart, serving as a role model to his family, fellow officers and the community. On behalf of the City of Reno, we extend our sincere condolences to Master Police Officer Tindell’s family, friends and colleagues, and we are incredibly grateful for the legacy he leaves behind.”
"Master Police Officer Tindell devoted his life to protecting and serving our community,” said Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve. “Reno has lost a devoted public servant, and our hearts are with his family, loved ones and every member of the Reno Police Department as we mourn this loss together.”
Tindell was a devoted father whose five children were his greatest pride. He is survived by his mother, father, fiancé and his five children.
