A repeat offender who was convicted of grand larceny following a jury trial has been sentenced to more than 12 years in prison after being adjudicated as a habitual criminal.
54-year-old James Padgett will be eligible for parole after five years, according to the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office.
According to the case details, Padgett’s case involved six thefts from the Sparks Safeway over six months, totaling at least $1,825.
The investigation began in February of last year after the store’s loss prevention staff identified him stealing and connected him to previous thefts at the location for which he had been convicted.
While that theft was being investigated, Padgett entered the store five more times between March and July and continued stealing. In July, Sparks Police found Padgett during a traffic stop and arrested him.
Deputy District Attorney Rebecca Koss prosecuted the case and argued for the habitual criminal sentence during sentencing, citing Padgett’s criminal history.
Before this case, Padgett had 26 misdemeanor convictions, two gross misdemeanor convictions and six felony convictions.
