Mark your calendars, a free shredding event is coming to Reno to help you protect your identity before it’s too late.
With Nevada recently ranked third in the nation for identity theft reports, a local event aims to help people get ahead of the problem before it hits.
The Better Business Bureau is hosting Secure Your ID Day on Saturday, October 11, giving people in Reno a free and secure way to dispose of personal documents.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., or until shred trucks are full, in the west parking lot of the Atlantis Casino Resort, located at 3800 S. Virginia St.
Mobile shredding trucks will be available to accept up to three boxes or bags of documents per car.
Attendees are asked to “Put everything in your trunk, stay in your car, and we’ll do the rest.”
“Destroy documents that have information you don’t want getting into the hands of fraudsters,” the event flyer says.
No registration is required, and there is no cost to participate.
In addition to shredding, organizers are also hosting a food drive.
People are encouraged to bring non-perishable food or cash donations to benefit the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, though donations are not required to participate.
The event is a joint effort by KTVN 2 News Nevada, the Better Business Bureau, American Document Destruction, and the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa.
