Fall leaves changing color

As the colors of fall begin to emerge across the region, 2 News Nevada Meteorologist Angela Schilling explains the science behind why leaves change color and how weather influences the process.

To experience the seasonal transformation firsthand, the City of Reno is inviting the public to a free Fall Tree Walk on Sunday, October 19.

The walk will begin at 11 a.m. at Virginia Lake Park, located at 1980 Lakeside Drive, with attendees asked to meet at the north parking lot at Lymbery Street and Lakeside Drive.

The event is hosted by Ward 2 Councilmember Naomi Duerr and local author and tree expert Rod Haulenbeek.

Participants will take a leisurely stroll around the lake while learning about a variety of tree species, their seasonal changes, and how they contribute to the local ecosystem.

“I’m delighted to invite everyone in our community to join us at Virginia Lake Park for a special opportunity to learn about our incredible trees with arborist Haulenbeek,” said Duerr. “We are so fortunate to have such vibrant seasons and beautiful outdoor spaces in our City, and I look forward to sharing them with those who attend on October 19.”

Since the event is outdoors, people are encouraged to check the forecast and dress appropriately for the weather.
