The Bureau of Land Management’s Carson City District, in partnership with the Desert Research Institute, is planning a prescribed burn near Red Rock Road and Bird Springs Road, south of Rancho Haven in Washoe County.
“The goal of this burn is to collect scientific data regarding heat and smoke release, as well as fire effects on vegetation,” said Jonathan Palma, Fire Management Officer.
The burn will include several small plots, each about 12 feet by 12 feet, totaling 0.03 acres.
Officials say the burn will be conducted over several days up to a week, during periods of stable weather, beginning Monday, November 24.
Some smoke may be visible, but the volume is expected to be minimal and dissipate quickly.
BLM wildland fire resources will be on site during the burn. Officials emphasized the small size and controlled nature of the burn, noting it is part of a scientific study rather than a wildfire threat.
