Wildfire preparedness for homeowners

A four-session course beginning in early August will offer area homeowners practical instruction on how to prepare for and reduce the risk of wildfire.

In a Facebook post, the Sparks Fire Department announced the course will be led by retired fire captain Bill Steward, who has more than 25 years of fire service experience.

The class runs from August 4 through August 7, with sessions held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the TMCC Meadowood Center. The cost to attend is $125.

“Are you ready if wildfire strikes? Join retired fire captain Bill Steward, who brings over 25 years of fire service experience, for this essential 8-hour course designed to help homeowners plan, prepare, and prevent,” the department said in the post.

According to Truckee Meadows Community College, the course draws on real-world examples, including the 2024 Davis Fire in Washoe Valley, which burned nearly 6,000 acres and destroyed multiple homes.

Topics include emergency planning, home hardening techniques, how to speak with insurance providers, and what actions to take during a wildfire.

Organizers say attendees will “walk away feeling empowered to educate, mitigate, and safeguard your home from future threats.”
