The Sparks Police Department is implementing a drone program that they say is designed to improve emergency response times and enhance community safety.

The drone program will provide aerial support during search and rescue missions, natural disasters, crime prevention, and critical incident responses.

The docked drone will be housed in a central location in Sparks, according to a release from the SPD.

From its docked position, it is intended to be able to respond to most critical 911 calls in less than two minutes.

Those operating the drone have obtained the FAA’s Part 107 Pilot’s License and certified training through the FAA.

Addressing potential privacy concerns, the SPD says drone operations will adhere to comprehensive privacy protocols and have clear operation guidelines.

Drone operations will comply with local, state, and federal laws and regulations, and personal privacy will be protected, the release says.

"This program is expected to reduce response times, minimize risks to citizens and first responders, and provide comprehensive emergency support," said the release in part. "Additionally, the drone program will aid in solving crimes committed within the City of Sparks and neighboring jurisdictions."
