4th grade students at Libby Booth Elementary School have been chosen to paint handmade ornaments that will later be decorating the U.S. Capitol Christmas tree in Washington D.C.
Chrisca, one of the students, says, "I painted a mountain blue bird because I love birds, and I just think that they're really pretty."
Brooke, another 4th grade student, says, "Big horn sheep because I think big horn sheep are cool."
Some Washoe County officials stopped by to check out the fun. Even school board president Beth Smith joined in on the art project.
"These children are definitely outshining me. I have decided to do the Biggest Little City in the World, the Reno sign," said Smith.
Every year the U.S. Capitol honors a different state by picking a Christmas tree from its local forest and filling it with decorations celebrating that particular state.
After the official tree is harvested in October from the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, it will be transported to D.C. and all of the ornaments created by these students will be placed all over the tree for everyone to see.
At the tree lighting event in December, a child from Nevada will get the honor to light the tree.
