A suspect who allegedly broke into a Reno home armed with a machete and tied up a person in the course of a burglary and auto theft has been arrested.

On Monday, September 1, around 1:45 a.m., a resident on Marsh Avenue in Reno was awoken by an unknown person at their bedside, according to a release from the Regional Crime Suppression Unit.

The suspect, later identified as 47-year-old Edgar Hernandez-Vega, was wearing a partial face covering and armed with a machete, according to the release.

Hernandez-Vega allegedly demanded that the homeowner open a safe and stole additional property from inside the house.

The victim was tied up, and Vega allegedly left the home in the victim's car, which was found abandoned a short time later.

A Reno Police Department Intel Analysis was able to identify a potential suspect and suspect vehicle.

The RCSU investigated further, and on September 3, found the suspect vehicle.

After conducting surveillance, Hernandez-Vega was arrested on South Virginia Street with the weapon used in the crime and objects stolen from the home.

It was determined that Hernandez-Vega entered the victim's home through an open garage door.

He was booked into the Washoe County Jail on charges including kidnapping in the second degree, robbery with a deadly weapon, grand theft auto, false imprisonment, burglary with a deadly weapon, and battery with a deadly weapon.

The RCSU is interested in anyone who may have information regarding the burglary or any video of the suspect in the Marsh Avenue, Sharon Way, and Walker Street areas in the early morning hours of September 1.
