Truckee Meadows Water

Truckee Meadows Water Authority is asking residents to temporarily reduce outdoor water use following recent thunderstorms that stirred up dirt and debris in the Truckee River.

The utility has shut down some of its water intake capacity to prevent sediment from entering the treatment system.

While the area’s water supply remains secure, the move temporarily lowers the amount of river water available for treatment and distribution.

“Closing our river intakes when the water is especially muddy is a standard measure to protect both our treatment process and water quality,” said Will Raymond, TMWA director of water operations and water quality. “We’re asking customers to help by cutting back on outdoor watering until the river clears and we can restore full production levels.”

Indoor water use is not affected, and the safety and quality of drinking water remain unchanged, according to the agency. The request is only temporary, and customers will be notified when normal river conditions return and outdoor watering schedules can resume.
