The Washoe County School District has released absence numbers from last Friday, when there were large-scale walkouts by students protesting ICE.
The number of middle school absences increased by 29 percent that day, from 4 percent on January 23 to 33 percent on January 30.
The number of high school absences rose by 30 percent, from 16 percent on January 23 to 46 percent on January 30.
Elementary school absences were mostly unchanged.
In releasing the numbers, the school district noted that there is no way to definitely tie all of the increased absences to students participating in the walkouts, as other causes, like illness or transportation issues, could have been a factor for some.
