Phone Scam with WCSO badge

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) is warning of a new scam text message going to many people in the area claiming to be the Nevada DMV.

In a post recently published to Facebook, the WCSO points out that the Nevada DMV would never send a text message from an international number regarding any official business.

The Sparks Police Department has already released information recently about this same scam.

The scam text claims to be the Nevada DMV with a "final notice" falsely threatening action regarding a vehicle registration suspension, the revocation of driving privileges or potential credit score damages.

The texts also usually have at least one suspicious-looking link attached.

Officials say that people should be on the lookout for the following red flags:

  • Any messages sent from an unknown or international number
  • Any links that use a suspicious domain (instead of an official .gov address)
  • Official-sounding texts that do not contain personal details like name, ticket number or vehicle info
  • Any texts using urgent or threatening language

If you do find yourself receiving these scam texts, do not click any attached links. You can reach out to verify any claims with the DMV directly using the DMV's website, and report any threatening messages to your phone carrier and to the FTC.
