As we've reported, there were two deadly crashes involving motorcycles this last weekend in Reno.

The Reno Police Department says the number one factor in these types of crashes is speed.

RPD say 25 people died in crashes within city limits last year.

We are only halfway through the year, and Reno is already at 16 deaths.

Over the course of the next few days, northern Nevada streets will be filled with motorcycles ahead of the Street Vibrations Spring Rally.

Some riders are asking for drivers to be a little more mindful of extra bikers out this weekend.

"Individuals that drive in cars and trucks and big rigs, pay attention to the little guy, the little guy on the motorcycle," said Nathan Haley, motorcycle rider for 40 years.

Reno Police emphasize that riders should always be wearing a helmet, no matter where they're going.

They say both drivers and riders should be making eye contact with one another.

Officers also advise that people should be thinking multiple steps ahead.

"Super important thing is to always be riding 15 seconds ahead," said Mario Reza, Reno Policer Officer for the Traffic and Motor Division. "Expect the unexpected. So, if you think a car is coming out, prepare yourself for that car coming out and prepare yourself for any situation that can come in front of you."

If you are riding at night, they recommend wearing reflective clothing.

They also remind motorcyclists that splitting lanes is illegal in Nevada.

Officers are asking for everyone to make sure they're checking their blind spots before making lane changes.

"Double check your blind spots, a motorcycle, you won't be able to see them in your blind spot and they sneak up on you," Officer Reza said. "Double check, do a head check twice and when it's safe to do so, proceed."

The Reno Harley Davidson says they see more people buying motorcycles this time of year.

They are asking riders to make sure they're checking their bikes before heading out.

"We recommend that all of our riders go through a rider safety course, become proficient," said Travis Calvert, Marketing Manager, Reno Harley Davidson. "Also it's very important to make sure your motorcycle is in top operating condition. Make sure you're checking those tire pressures, make sure your brakes are good. Make sure everything is up to shape."

RPD also reminds people to not be distracted while driving or riding.

If you plan on attending the rally this week, they ask you to not drive under the influence.
