A U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer spent nearly two hours in the water as his team rescued 16 survivors from a boat wreck off Mexico's Baja California coast. The crew responded to a mayday call in the early morning of Oct. 16, flying from the Coast Guard Air Station in Ventura, California. The people rescued were Mexican nationals, according to the Mexican consulate, but the boat’s origin, destination and what it was doing were not clear. Another 11 people were believed missing, but the Coast Guard called off its search late Sunday, unable to locate more survivors.
