The hurricane season in the Pacific Ocean already has been very active, thanks to the El Nino weather phenomenon. This week alone, Hurricane Polo drenched Mexico’s Pacific coast as it seesawed between Category 4 and 5. And in storm-weary Hawaii, there’s the potential for catastrophic flooding from a growing Hurricane Nolo. So far this year, the eastern and central Pacific have seen a higher-than-average number of tropical storms. Three Pacific hurricanes have reached Category 5 strength, tying a record set in 2002. University of Miami hurricane expert Brian McNoldy says this year could end up seeing the strongest El Nino on record.

Nolo is now the latest hurricane in the Pacific Ocean. The National Hurricane Center says Nolo strengthened into a hurricane Thursday. It’s expected to intensify and make a turn toward Hawaii’s Big Island. Residents there are preparing for the possibility of catastrophic flooding in the coming days. Forecasters warn that the Big Island could see up to 35 inches of rain. The hurricane center says parts of Hawaii will likely start experiencing hurricane conditions by Friday night. Meanwhile, heavy rains from powerful Hurricane Polo could cause flooding and landslides in Mexico.

Residents on Hawaii’s Big Island are bracing for potentially life-threatening and catastrophic flooding from Hurricane Nolo, while Mexico is still under the threat of another Pacific hurricane, Polo. The U.S. National Weather Service said Nolo was about 220 miles south of the Big Island on Friday morning and headed to the northeast, with tropical storm conditions expected to begin in the evening. Forecasters are warning the island could see rainfall totals of 15 to 30 inches. Polo is churning off Mexico's western coast as a Category 5 hurricane and is expected to turn toward the Baja California Peninsula, where storm conditions are expected late Sunday into Monday.
