Maine Democrats are meeting to pick a candidate to face longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins after Graham Platner dropped out of the race. Democrats' support has coalesced around former Senate President Troy Jackson, a fifth-generation logger from rural northern Maine. The new nominee will be selected at a state party convention in Bangor on Saturday and will have less than four months to campaign. Jackson campaigned alongside Platner during a failed bid for governor and was progressives’ favorite to replace him on the ballot. Democrats need a Maine Senate win to take back control of the chamber from Republicans.
