Nolo is now the latest hurricane in the Pacific Ocean. The National Hurricane Center says Nolo strengthened into a hurricane Thursday. It’s expected to intensify and make a turn toward Hawaii’s Big Island. Residents there are preparing for the possibility of catastrophic flooding in the coming days. Forecasters warn that the Big Island could see up to 35 inches of rain. The hurricane center says parts of Hawaii will likely start experiencing hurricane conditions by Friday night. Meanwhile, heavy rains from powerful Hurricane Polo could cause flooding and landslides in Mexico.

Residents on Hawaii’s Big Island are bracing for potentially life-threatening and catastrophic flooding from Hurricane Nolo, while Mexico is still under the threat of another Pacific hurricane, Polo. The U.S. National Weather Service said Nolo was about 210 miles south of the Big Island on Friday morning and headed to the northeast, with tropical storm conditions expected to begin on land in the evening. Forecasters are warning the island could see 10 to 15 inches of rain, with 50 mph wind gusts. Polo is churning off Mexico's western coast as a Category 5 hurricane and is expected to turn toward the Baja California Peninsula, where storm conditions are expected to begin late Sunday into Monday.
