Germany and France are set to deepen nuclear cooperation. The move highlights Europe's move toward defense self-reliance. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron announced this commitment after talks at the Norvenich air base in Germany on Friday. The announcement follows a joint refueling exercise involving French Rafale and German Eurofighter jets. Macron invited European partners in early March to strengthen nuclear deterrence cooperation amid doubts about U.S. defense reliability. France remains the only nuclear power in the 27-nation European Union since Brexit. The cooperation aims to complement NATO’s deterrent and reinvigorate bilateral ties.
