Several Nevada lawmakers have reintroduced a bill to prevent nuclear waste being stored at Yucca Mountain.
U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) and Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) reintroduced the Nuclear Waste Informed Consent Act.
Representatives Dina Titus (D-NV-01), Steven Horsford (D-NV-04), and Susie Lee (D-NV-03) introduced companion legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Sen. Cortez Masto's office says the Nuclear Waste Informed Consent Act is based on recommendations from Department of Energy’s (DOE) 2012 Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future and DOE’s 2017 consent-based siting report. Accordingly, her office says this bill would require that the Secretary of Energy secure written consent from the following entities before moving forward with a nuclear waste repository:
* Governor of the host state
* Affected units of local government
* Each contiguous unit of local government primarily affected by the repository
* Affected Tribes
