Another day in Nevada, and we have ourselves another proposed lands bill. Except this one dials it back a bit, focusing on just the state's capital.
Nevada Senator Jacky Rosen (D) is the one spearheading this specific piece of legislation. It's called the Carson City Public Land Correction Act.
Congressman Mark Amodei (R) has attempted to get a lands bill passed, but with no luck. Amodei is trying to push through another bill known as the Northern Nevada Economic Development and Conservation Act.
A section of the act is almost identical to what the Senator is introducing.
Rosen's legislation is trying to transfer about 1,300 acres of Bureau of Land Management land to Carson City.
360 acres would be available to purchase for economic development.
Parts of the revenue would be used for wildfire prevention and environmental protection.
This is the map that shows where the BLM land is in proximity to Carson City and what is being proposed.
The boxes with lines through them are the pieces of land that are proposed, each for a different use and method.
Each of the blue zones is about 200 acres in size. The purple areas would be the land for the sale. The red areas are known as the proposed reversionary interest. Amodei's office says that land is already Carson City's, but the government has final say on how it's used. Removing the interest means Carson gets back that luxury, and the green zones would give the land back to the federal government.
Senator Rosen sent a press statement out saying:
“As Nevada continues to grow, we need to make sure that federal lands are being used in a way that best fits the needs of our growing local communities. I’ve been working with Mayor Bagwell and local leaders to make sure this bill provides Carson City with additional land to build more housing and commercial buildings, improve infrastructure, and expand access to outdoor recreation, while also ensuring proceeds of land sales go towards much-needed local programs and conservation initiatives. I’ll continue working to pass this bill so we can support commonsense growth in Carson City.”
Carson City Mayor Lori Bagwell was also included in the statement.
“This legislation reflects years of collaboration to align federal land management with Carson City’s on-the-ground needs,” said Carson City Mayor Lori Bagwell. “By correcting land boundaries and enabling strategic conveyances, this bill will strengthen public safety, improve transportation connectivity, support flood mitigation and wildfire resilience, and give our community the tools it needs to plan responsibly for the future. I appreciate Senator Rosen’s leadership in advancing a solution that benefits both Carson City residents and our federal partners.”
We reached out to the BLM for comment, and it said the federal agency does not speak on proposed legislation.
