Earthquake

The Nevada Seismological Laboratory (NSL) is monitoring earthquakes in Tosa Wihi Hunu’u, near Midas in Elko County and north central Nevada.

This earthquakes occurred on an unknown fault in the valley of Willow Creek.

Today's first earthquake had a measure of 4.8, deemed as an extensional earthquake. Three minutes later it was followed by an earthquake measuring 4.3.

Earthquakes like this contribute to stretching the crust of Nevada, adding an area approximately the size of a football field to the state every year, according to the Nevada Seismological laboratory.

NSL continues to monitor these earthquakes.
