Nevada State Police (NSP) has shared details of a fatal crash that happened in the early morning hours of June 27.

According to a release sent by NSP, on Friday at around 5:10 p.m. troopers with the Nevada Highway Patrol were called to a vehicle crash on Highway 50, 1 mile west of Ely.

An investigation determined that a Toyota Sequoia SUV was traveling east on Highway 50 at a speed too fast to safely navigate a curve.

Officials say this caused the SUV to drift into the westbound lane where they overcorrected multiple times, then struck a work zone sign and a metal guardrail before overturning.

Five of the six people in the SUV were not wearing seatbelts, resulting in multiple ejections.

Two of the people, juveniles aged 16 and 17, sustained fatal injuries and were declared dead at the scene.

The driver of the SUV, also a juvenile, was treated for minor injuries, then taken into custody by the White Pine Sheriff's Office.

Officials suspect that drug and alcohol impairment played a factor in the crash.

The crash is still being investigated by the Nevada Highway Patrol Traffic Homicide Unit. They are asking any witnesses to this crash or anyone with information to contact the Nevada Highway Patrol Elko Office at (775) 753-1111, or email ncemirt@dps.state.nv.us.
