A new course at the University of Nevada, Reno is tackling mental health.

The free course is offered online, it's called Hopeful Mindsets and has as goal of helping students identify ways to overcome challenges.

It is a self-paced 10 lesson course and students can enroll any time.

Students say, accessibility may be the best thing about it.

“If I was in Carson right now or in other states, I could access it, I could go back to it,” UNR Student Noemi Ortiz, said.

200 students have already signed up for the course.

Hopeful Mindsets courses already exist for high school, but this version was developed especially for the college level.

The course is a mix of lessons, videos, and activities and it could not have come at a better time, those in charge say the pandemic has led to more students dealing with mental health challenges.

“We want to help them regain that sense of control by reminding them, that the self-defeating thoughts they had, stress they are facing, can be overcome by identifying small steps to achieve their goals,” says Jennifer Lowman, Director of student persistent research.
