CORRECTION: We originally reported that Sam Brown's campaign did not respond to our request for a comment. Brown's campaign did reply with a comment at 11:57 a.m., but due to a technical difficulty, we did not immediately receive the email. Â
Brown's campaign said, "These are outright lies and a Democrat political stunt. Like many Nevadans, Sam Brown is pro-life, with exceptions for rape, incest, and/or the life of mother. Sam has consistently believed this issue should be decided at the state level, and the people of Nevada have made their position clear."
Nevada Democrats are taking aim at GOP U.S. Senate candidate Sam Brown for his anti-abortion stance and past comments.
During a press conference on Thursday, Nevada Democrats accused Brown of having an anti-abortion agenda.
In 2023, the Nevada Legislature passed a bill that enshrined abortion protections within the state constitution, which was later signed by Republican Governor Joe Lombardo.
Former Lieutenant Governor Kate Marshall has pointed out that the abortion protections enshrined within the Nevada state constitution will not hold up if the U.S. Senate passes a nationwide 15-week abortion ban, which is being championed by GOP leaders, including Senator Lindsey Graham.
"Senate Republicans and Mitch McConnell have recruited Sam Brown who has been a strong advocate for (anti-abortion) in any event," said former Lt. Governor Kate Marshall (D - Nevada).
Nevada Democrats are spotlighting a candidate questionnaire that included the question: "Under what circumstances should abortion be allowed?" To which Brown responded that it should be allowed in cases where there is "risk of life to the mother."
Though Brown has remained quiet on abortion during this election cycle, NV Dems are drawing attention to his endorsement of a 2013 Texas law that places a 20-week abortion ban.
"I think it's a shame that here is Texas, which is being lauded as such a conservative state with regard to the issue of life; half of Europe has stricter laws than we do here. If we can't just let the issue lie where we're at, we need people to continually go back to Austin who understand the sanctity of life," said Captain Sam Brown during a Far North Dallas Tea Party Texas House District 112 Forum.
"He even supported a radical Texas abortion ban that was described as one of the strictest anti-abortion measures in the country," said Reproductive Freedom for All Director of Nevada Campaigns Denise Lopez
Nationwide, Democrats are using the abortion issue to energize voters.
"Sam Brown is absolutely a threat because his election doesn't happen in a silo. We have anti-choice activists working across the state to ensure that not just Sam Brown is elected, but that anti-choice Republicans are elected across the state. So, we can't say that just because that certain majority is needed, it's not possible," said Democratic Women of Washoe County Chair Erica Roth.Â
Marshall also explained during the press conference that the incumbent Senator Jacky Rosen has been a vocal advocate for the Women's Health Protection Act, which aims to safeguard abortion rights across the country and prevent further restrictions on access to reproductive healthcare.
"One of the things that is happening with the overthrow of Roe v. Wade is there is a lot of confusion, and doctors don't want to be sued. And so, if a woman goes into the hospital and there are issues and complications, they take time, they pause. They don't know what to do, and at the same time, her life is at risk," said Marshall.Â
In the third 2024 GOP presidential primary debate, Nikki Haley explained that Republicans pushing for a federal abortion ban are not being forthright about the feasibility of passing such legislation, as it would need 60 senate votes.
"We haven't had 60 senate seats in over a hundred years. We might have 45 pro-life senators. So, no Republican president can ban abortions, no more than a Democrat can ban these state laws," said Republican presidential candidate and former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley.
Brown has stated that his experience in Afghanistan, where he nearly lost his life, has largely shaped his anti-abortion "pro-life" stance. We have reached out to Brown's campaign, but they have not responded yet.
