The weather can be dangerous but it can also be beautiful. Whenever a rainbow develops in Northern Nevada, photos usually show up in our email box from viewers. There is something about seeing a colorful rainbow after the storm. We got one photo this week with not only a rainbow, but also pretty pink clouds in the background from the sunset.
If you look closely you can also see a double rainbow. The colors aren’t quite as defined, but you can definitely see the arc shape. The arc appears to be more pink than any other color. The email says Northern Nevada, without an exact location.
Pink is a common color during sunrise and sunset due to sunlight passing through more atmosphere. This means that shorter wavelengths like blue and violet are scattered, while longer wave lengths like red and pink become more visible.
According to NOAA, rainbows occur when light exits a raindrop. You can make a rainbow by running your sprinkler on a sunny day. If the sunlight hits it just right, you’ll see a beautiful array of colors.
