As the mercury rises across the region, Washoe County wants residents to know that they are opening up cooling centers for folks to beat the heat.

The National Weather Service extended the excessive heat warning across Northern Nevada through Friday, July 12.

There are some spots to cool off such as the Washoe County Senior Center and Washoe County Libraries.

The Senior Center is located at 1155 East Ninth Street, and this weekend they will be open from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.

They'll also be open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. all week through Friday.

A couple tips on staying safe in the heat include limiting outdoor activities and drinking plenty of water.

Also make sure to wear light clothing and sunscreen.

For those experiencing homelessness, the resource center at the Nevada Cares Campus is open daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
