The Reno Public Safety Center, under construction along the corner of Sutro and Kuenzli streets, will soon become the Reno Police Department’s new headquarters.
Chief Kathryn Nance says she plans to move her officers into the building starting in August, and with that move, comes some noticeable improvements.
“With the current police facility, our office space is very limited,” Nance told 2 News Nevada on Friday. “We have some spaces for some of our detectives and personnel, but we have a lot of people that are sharing office spaces, and people that are utilizing office spaces that are not offices, things like jail cells, old closets.”
The new building has office spaces, multiple break areas, a sunroom, improved parking, and more.
“One thing that I’m most proud of in this space is the wellness side and the aspect of it. Spaces where officers can go to decompress, places to go where they can have breaks, where they socialize with their friends,” Nance said.
The building will even have features for the public. Firearm storage outside allows visitors to securely lock up their guns before they enter the building. Part of the parking lot is designated as a safe pick-up and drop-off spot for people who are meeting strangers to purchase something they saw online.
Nance said the building will also support community growth. She’s leaving some offices and lockers empty for future recruits.
