The Sparks Fire Department is reminding people to be careful if they choose to fry their Thanksgiving turkeys.
In a post on Facebook, the fire department shows a frozen turkey going up in flames stretching several feet into the air as oil explodes from their frier.
They have a number of turkey tips to keep things safe when the big day gets here.
- Make sure you completely thaw and dry your turkey. A partially frozen turkey will cause cooking oil to splatter.
- Fill pot with the correct amount of oil. Test the amount of oil you need by filling your fryer with water and putting the turkey in, covering it by 1/2. Mark the level, dump the water and thoroughly dry the pot and turkey. Fill the pot with oil to the marked level.
- Raise and lower the turkey slowly to prevent oil splatter, burns, and fire.
- Be sure the oil is at the correct temperature, never to exceed 325 degrees.
- Whether the football game is tied or not, never leave the fryer unattended!
