A Sparks man was sentenced as a Habitual Criminal.
Patrick Shipley was sentenced to 20 years in prison with the eligibility for parole after eight years.
He pleaded guilty to owning a firearm as a prohibited person.
Before this case, Shipley had a criminal history including forgery, burglary, drug possession and firearm offenses.
In May of 2021, a Washoe County Sheriff's Deputy saw Shipley driving on the shoulder of a road going 15 miles per hour under the speed limit.
During a traffic stop, with the help of a K9, the deputy found methamphetamine, marijuana and a single action revolver hidden under the vehicle's dash.
A letter was provided by a third party claiming that the gun was theirs and not Shipley's, but further investigations revealed that the information in the letter was false and was written at Shipley's request.
During sentencing, Chief Deputy District Attorney Matt Lee argued that Shipley shows all the signs of being a repeat criminal offender, including being involved in the criminal justice system for the past fifty years.
