Tree Well Safety 2

The U.S. Forest Service shared information about the dangers of tree wells and tips on how to stay safe.

A tree well accident occurs when skiers or riders fall into deep snow surrounding the base of a tree. As a result, the person can become immobilized and suffocate.

This usually happens during or after large snow storms.

Whitewater Ski Resort Ski Patrol shared a tree well safety awareness video, which can be watched here.

You can also find tips about deep snow safety here.

These are some tips the U.S. Forest Service shared:

  • Always ski or ride with a partner and keep each other in sight.
  • Ski or ride in control at all times.
  • Give tree wells a wide berth.
  • Carry safety equipment. This can include a shovel, probe and whistle.
  • If a tree well accident occurs, call for help immediately.
