Three close allies of the United States say they are ready to join forces to defend their interests in the Middle East and stop Iran’s retaliatory strikes following the killing of its supreme leader. Others around the world expressed concern that the violence could spread into a wider war. Iran’s capital again saw explosions as Israel said it targeted the “heart” of Tehran. Iran continued launching missiles at Israel and Gulf states. Iranian officials also hurried to plan a future after the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had no designated successor. Some Iranians who had long suffered from political repression celebrated.
