A grass fire killed four Canadian service members and injured 39 other people, 19 of them critically, as it swept through a military training area where soldiers were using live ammunition. Military officials believed the fire was contained enough to allow the training on an Alberta base to continue Saturday. But the winds suddenly shifted, and military officials said the flames were upon them in less than a minute. Prime Minister Mark Carney described the fire as one of the worst peacetime tragedies for Canada’s military on domestic soil. He ordered flags lowered to half-staff on federal buildings nationwide.
