A hard-line Iranian general linked to notorious attacks at home and abroad is believed to have seized a place near the center of power as negotiations with the United States hang in the balance. Brig. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi has become a major player in formulating Iran's tough stance in negotiating a possible end to the war with the U.S. He is one of the direct contacts to negotiators aiming for a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Vahidi, who is 67, is believed to have direct contact with Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei. However, Vahidi hasn't been seen publicly since February 8, weeks before the war began.
