The holidays are just about wrapped up and if you're one of those people who received too many gifts or duplicate gifts, one way to de-clutter your home, is to donate!
Many non-profits are looking for items like jackets, hats and other items for the cold weather. Hygiene products and diapers are also greatly needed for families in Reno.
As the temperatures drop, local nonprofits are looking for donations to help keep families warm in our community. Thousands of people in need rely on donations to survive, especially during the winter time when temperatures drop significantly. Now, many groups are hoping that you'll help give after the holidays into the new year.
The committee to aid abused women, also known as “CAAW” is just one of many non-profits in town like St. Vincent's and Goodwill, looking for donations for needy families after the holidays. “If you've got extra gifts that you don't need. If you have clothing, household items. Anything that you don't need we can take because another person can use that,” said Sylvia Gonzalez.
The Committee to Aid Abused Women, also known as "CAAW" helps serve nearly 4,800 people every year, mostly women and children. About 100 people stop by every day for supplies. "The most we need is diapers, pajamas, slippers, for the shelter women and children,” said Sylvia Gonzalez.
After the holidays many groups like "CAAW" encourage people to donate more, and with temperatures dropping below the freezing mark overnight. Gear for the homeless is also in big demand. "A hat, a jacket is a necessity. It's not just something you'd like to have. It's something you need,” said Emelie Williams.
The St. Vincent's programs help serve about 1,000 people a day, for food and clothing donations.
If the gift of giving isn't enough, there's also a tax incentive. “It's a great write-off to have and you can know that you did something good along the way,” said Emelie Williams.
"Even though for you it's just extra clothes or extra junk. I mean it's something good for other people,” said Sylvia Gonzalez.
