The Ohio State Fair is open again, but all its amusement rides remain closed a day after a thrill ride on the midway broke apart, killing one man and injuring seven other people.
Gov. John Kasich says all the rides will be closed until they are inspected and deemed safe. He will tour the fair in Columbus on Thursday.
Officials say the 18-year-old man who was killed was one of several people thrown to the ground when the Fire Ball ride malfunctioned.
A video shows the ride's large arm in motion above its platform when a crashing sound is heard and a four-passenger carriage on the arm breaks apart.
Authorities say three of the injured remain hospitalized in critical condition.
Video captured by a bystander shows the ride swinging back and forth like a pendulum and spinning in the air when it crashes into something and part of the ride flies off, throwing riders to the ground.
Director of Agriculture David Daniels says all of rides are checked several times when they're being set up to ensure they're set up the way the manufacturer intended and officials say the Fire Ball ride was inspected at a couple of different stages and was signed off Wednesday.
Daniels says at the start of the day 11 rides didn't open because the inspection work wasn't done on them and four rides won't be operating because they didn't meet the mechanical test.
On its website, Amusements of America says that since its debut in 2002, the Fire Ball has become "one of the most popular thrill rides on the AOA Midway." The company description of the ride says it swings riders 40 feet (12 meters) above the midway while spinning them at 13 revolutions per minute.
In a statement posted on its Twitter page, the fair says it is investigating. It did not immediately respond to a request seeking further comment.
The Ohio State Fair runs through August 6.
