KNPB Shines Spotlight on Career, Technical Education Programs

Eight high school seniors from the Washoe County School District (WCSD) have earned college scholarships through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for the 2014-2015 school year.

“We are so proud of these distinguished students and how they represent our school district,” said WCSD Chief School Performance Officer Dr. Paul LaMarca. “We look forward to their collegiate accomplishments and the contributions they will continue to make to our community.”

Four students were named Merit Scholars and will receive $2,500 scholarships. Four other students will receive college-sponsored scholarships from the schools in which they plan to enroll this fall. College and universities sponsor National Merit Scholarships that are renewable and cover up to four years of undergraduate study at the sponsor institution. Stipends range from $500 to $2,000 annually. Within those limits, officials at the college determine each winner’s annual merit scholarship stipend using financial information filed with the institution.

Here are the names of the WCSD students who will receive scholarships, and the high schools from which they are graduating:

Ariel M. Gupta, Reno High School

Michael Y. Wan, Wooster High School

College-Sponsored National Merit Scholarships-- $500 -$2,000

Brittany Blair, Reno High School

Isaac B. Hickox-Young, Damonte Ranch High School

Anna Miller, Reed High School

Bailey C. Watkins, Galena High School
