The utility began intentionally shutting off power in 2019 to prevent wildfires, after an investigation determined the Camp Fire that wiped out most of the town of Paradise was sparked by its equipment.
More than 1 million people were expected be in the dark Monday during what officials have said could be the strongest wind event in California this year.
The shutoffs come as a new wildfire broke out in Napa County, prompting the evacuation of residents and a hospital.
