The Carson City Planning Commission is scheduled to consider a special use permit to expand an existing gas station onto the site of the now closed Cafe at Adele's restaurant.Â
On December 17th, Commissioners will consider adding parking spaces, a bench, trash dumpster and landscaping that expand onto the neighboring property, located at Carson and William Streets.Â
Planning documents say since the "applicant will not be meeting all of the design requirements of the Downtown Mixed Use zoning district, primarily because a building is not proposed, the design is considered an alternative approach to the design guidelines, requiring a Special Use Permit."
Two months ago the damaged building was approved for demolition.
The public meeting is scheduled for December 17, 3 p.m. inside the Community Center at 851 East William Street. Â

UPDATE, MID-OCTOBER 2019:
Cafe at Adele's - a longtime staple of Carson City - will be closing for good.
The popular eatery shut its doors in March after a fire broke out in a laundry room causing smoke damage throughout the restaurant.
Many were unsure about Adele’s' future as the closed sign stayed up into fall.
Over the weekend, the Abowd family told us ongoing insurance issues have forced them to permanently close Adele’s.
They added, "Adele’s was filled with stories, with love, but nothing lasts forever."
UPDATE, OCTOBER 2019:Â
The family that owns Cafe at Adele's restaurant in Carson City says they will rebuild after a fire damaged their business early Thursday morning.
"Over 40 years ago my grandparents moved here and started the business and my parents took it over 20 years ago," says Raquel Abowd.
The family-run restaurant opened in 1977, but the building dates back to the 1800's.Â
The Carson City Fire Department says crews stopped the fire from spreading throughout the building..Â
Thankfully no one was hurt after the 4 a.m. fire, but there is a lot of damage.Â
"Walking into the building, the smell of smoke just permeates the place and over the fireplace where I actually just got married in front of. Two years ago was a picture of my grandparents and all the soot and ash, and from the water, it made it look like tears that were below their eyes in the picture. That was pretty rough to see."
Abowd adds, "It's been a very emotional day seeing my parents and their reactions was hard, but what was amazing was seeing their staff show up and say 'how can we help?'"
It's unclear how it will take to reopen the business.Â
"It can be built back and will be, and all the intracasies of Adele's. The things that are being salvaged in order to keep Adele's as special as he is."
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. @GovSisolak visited crews shortly after to show his appreciation and meet with crews on scene. Thank you A Shift for your great work and thank you Governor for stopping by. pic.twitter.com/7RedMQGsDv
