Plans to Exhume Bodies for Potential Development at Hillside Cemetery Suspended

A suspended plan to remove bodies from a historic cemetery was discussed at the Washoe County Health District meeting on Thursday.

The residents have been fighting against the closure of hillside cemetery and concerned residents brought their feedback to the Health District's meeting.

John Muran, Reno resident said, "This is the fourth attempt that I am personally aware of to grab the land at Hillside. William Thornton tried, the University of Nevada tried, they realized it was too much of a can of worms."

There was no vote on the issue at today's meeting.

On Sunday, September 18, Sierra Memorial Gardens say they have suspended their plans to exhume and move more than 800 of the oldest bodies in the Hillside Cemetery, .but residents say the issue will not go away.

In August, the owner of Hillside Cemetery posted plans to disinter the bodies to clear the land for potential development.

The announcement drew immediate outcry as the cemetery dates back to the 1800s and holds the remains of Reno's founders. Its last grave was dug in 1959.

Sunday, Hillside Cemetery released the following statement:

“In view of a few families' unfavorable responses received during the notification phase of the restoration plan for the Hillside Cemetery, effective today the plan for the restoration has been suspended.”
