Preparing For Winter Snow

As we move into the winter season, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) prepares for winter snow removal.

Annual winter preparations begin in August.

NDOT prepares 80 snow plows, as well as other equipment needed to keep the roads clear in advance.

Along with snow and ice equipment, sand is combined with salt and is being stockpiled in the area. The sand and salt bags will then be spread on the roads once snow begins to fall. This will ensure your car gains more traction which will keep you safer.

According to NDOT, on average 2,000 crashes occur across the state every year due to bad weather conditions.

Officials say driving too fast, too closely, or failing to stay in a lane and over-correcting the mistake can lead to these crashes.

If you have to drive in harsh weather condition here's a list developed by NDOT to look out for:

Winter Driving Tips

·  Remove snow and ice from all vehicle windows, mirrors and lights prior to driving

·  Only travel in winter weather when absolutely necessary, and leave early to provide enough time to safely reach your destination

·   Slow down on winter roads- speed limits are based on road and weather conditions

·   Keep a safe distance from other vehicles

·  Watch carefully for snow removal equipment

·  Use extra caution on bridges and ramps, as they may be icy
