French President Emmanuel Macron says he hopes for a meeting in coming weeks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

Speaking alongside Trump on Monday, Macron said G-7 leaders had agreed that Iran needs to meet its nuclear obligations and that there was a hope for a diplomatic breakthrough in the tensions that have grown since the U.S. left the 2015 nuclear accord.

Trump, asked about the U.S. relationship with Iran, said Iran isn't the same country it was when he took office, even though the U.S. has increased pressure on Iran in an effort to make it forfeit nuclear capabilities.

But Trump said the U.S. isn't looking for regime change.

"We're not looking for leadership change," Trump said.

Trump said Macron alerted him to the Iranian foreign minister's presence at the G7 summit, even though the U.S. wasn't informed of the visit in advance.

"President Macron told me exactly what was happening," Trump said.

Meanwhile, Macron also said the China trade war creates "uncertainty" with markets. Macron said Trump showed his willingness to come to an agreement over trade.

"Our deep wish is for an agreement to be found between the United States and China concerning trade," Macron said in French through an interpreter.

"What's bad for the economy is uncertainty," Macron said.

Trump said, “I think they want to make a deal. I'm not sure they have a choice. I don't say that as a threat, I don't think they have a choice… I think they want to make a deal very badly.

President Trump said he is not looking "at this moment" to impose tariffs on automobiles imported from Japan.

The U.S. and Japan say they are nearing a new trade agreement that would include more agricultural exports to Japan, such as beef and pork.

Trump made clear that imposing auto tariffs in the name of national security is an option at a later date but adds "we're not looking at that. We just want to be treated fairly."

Trump says Japan has run a large trade surplus with the U.S. and claims new trade deals will help transform the economy, though the trade tensions have spooked financial markets.

Macron also said that France and the U.S. reached a "very good agreement" defusing tensions over a French tax on online giants like Google.

The tax had prompted threats from President Trump of heavy tariffs on French wine.

Macron said they made "considerable headway in the spirit of unity" at the Group of Seven summit in Biarritz, France.

Macron said France would reimburse companies who pay the tax once an international tax deal is in place to replace the 3% French tax on French revenues of big online companies. It's aimed at reducing tax avoidance for digital multinationals.

Earlier, the Group of Seven rich democracies - the U.S., France, Britain, Germany, Japan, Canada and Italy - held a string of meetings on climate change, and  how digitalization is transforming the world, and the devastating fires in Amazon. 

The troubled world economy is overshadowing the meetings in the French Atlantic resort of Biarritz.

Macron also took a big gamble by inviting the Iranian foreign minister to Biarritz, hoping to secure a breakthrough in global tensions over Iran's nuclear program.

Also - President Trump said his private golf resort near Miami is the likely venue for next year's Group of Seven summit. He says no decision has been made, but claims no other venue under consideration matches what his resort - Trump National Doral - can offer.

Trump says the property, which is just minutes from the Miami airport, has a lot of acreage and properties that would allow delegations from each G-7 country to have its own building.
