Procession Honors Two BLM Firefighters After Fatal Crash North of Winnemucca

Nevada Highway Patrol troopers have identified the two BLM firefighters who were killed in a crash on State Route 140 north of Winnemucca on Sunday evening.

NHP says the driver of the BLM fire truck was 27-year-old Jacob O'Malley and the right front passenger was 22-year-old Will Hawkins, both from Northern Nevada.

Officials say the firefighters were traveling southbound from the Oregon area toward Winnemucca when a tire failure caused their vehicle to roll.

NHP says a third firefighter, identified as 23-year-old Zachery McElroy of Reno, was transported to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno with non-life threatening injuries.

On Monday morning dozens of law enforcement and firefighter vehicles escorted the remains of the fallen firefighters from Winnemucca back to Reno.

Bystanders lined the roadway to pay their respects including some firefighters from Carson City - who later joined the procession.

"No matter if we're in a fire truck or we're working in a fire or whatever tragedy happens to happen, it's still a line of duty death and it's still in the fire service and we're all working together and everybody will be affected by this,” says Chief Bob Schreihans, Carson City Fire Department.
