The Nevada Drought Summit wrapped up in Carson City on Wednesday after three days.
Our own chief meteorologist, Mike Alger was there today and talked about the impact of the drought on weather - here in Northern Nevada.
The purpose of the summit was to bring together representatives from the business, government, utility and private sectors to try to figure out the best way to mitigate the effects of the drought, and to prepare for future droughts.
It's an issue that Governor Sandoval is very passionate about, and it wraps up over three months of preliminary meetings leading up to the summit. So what's next? Members of the drought forum will meet again and take all of the testimony presented over the last three days to try to come up with a comprehensive set of recommendations to be presented to the governor to further mitigate our present drought, and help prepare for future events.
The focus of my talk was to try to help all those involved create a focused message that everybody can get behind.
Our drought and our response to it fortunately is one of the few what I call one-sided topics that has near universal agreement… In other words we are in a drought, and what can we do about it? I encouraged the participants to keep the message nonpolitical, and focused.
In addition, I think the message needs to present both the challenges and the victories that we've already seen here in Nevada for the most part because of mitigation efforts we already taken over the last couple of decades. We are in much better shape hydrologically than our neighbors to the west. And the public needs to know that as well. They need to know that their efforts are paying benefits.
