Reed ROTC to Represent Nevada at Pearl Harbor

The anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor is four days away. And as Americans prepare to commemorate that day, some local students are getting ready to play a big role in that.

The Reed High School ROTC program has been chosen to march in the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade in Hawaii this year. They will be representing the USS Nevada which was stationed there during the attacks.

"We need to represent who we are and how we do that within our marching and within our family aspect. And I think, because it's such a significant event, we should really pull through for that,” says Amelia Glowniak, Reed Raiders Battalion, Petty Officer 2nd Class.

The group raised more than $40,000 to pay for the trip. They've been doing car washes, yard sales and fundraising events for more than a year - 28 different fundraisers to send 36 students to march in the parade. They'll be the first Northern Nevada school ever to do this. They also had to qualify for the honor by getting good grades and doing hours of community service.

After all of that they've made their teacher very proud.

"They are a really great group of young men and women, and it kind of gives you faith in the future when you see them working hard and doing all their community service work to make this happen,” says Stephen Tynan, Reed High School ROTC Instructor.

The group from the Reed Raiders Battalion leaves for Waikiki Friday. And they wanted to say 'thank you' to everyone in the community who donated to their cause.
