There's a new addition to the Northern Nevada skyline: An American flag. However, it's not an ordinary flag. Instead, it's a huge American flag. It measures 40' by 80'.

"It's big," said Bryan Chowanski, General Sales Manager of Sierra RV. "We have a massive 40 by 80 foot American flag that we raised on Saturday."

The flag is so big that it is visible from near our station at Rock Blvd, nearly five miles away. Chowanski sees it on his way into work from Carson City.

"The last turn coming down by the Sierra Summit," he said. "You can't see it until you come around that last corner (on I-580) and you can see just the tip of it."

Its pole measures 134', about 15' of which is in the ground.

"So it's a big pole," laughed Chowanski. Chowanski said it is the biggest flag in Northern Nevada.

Sierra RV was recently acquired by Gander RV, which is known for putting up giant American flags at its properties.

If you are wondering if it is too big, here is the answer: No.

We reached out to the City of Reno which told us the City has no ordinances regarding the size of an American flag. It is protected here according to officials.

"It's a good thing there's not," said Chowanski.

Last month in Statesville, N.C., the city council told Gander RV that the flag was too big. That city has since imposed a $50 daily fine on Gander for breaking code. The company is in the headlines a lot recently for its flag 'controversy,' but Chowanski says the publicity or the advertising isn't the point.

"It's a nice side note to have this flag here as advertising, but that's not what it's designed for."

Instead, it is designed for people to reflect and celebrate America.

"For everyone who has ever put their life on the line to give us our freedom, that's what that flag represents," said Chowanski.

Sierra RV is located at 9125 S Virginia St, Reno, NV 89511.Â
