RPD: Street Racing Led to Fatal Crash

A Reno Police Department investigation has determined that street racing--and not wearing a seat belt--led to the death of a 26-year-old driver on Sunday morning.

Investigators say two vehicles were traveling at a high rate of speed during an illegal speed competition on S. Virginia St. just before 1:15 a.m.

The driver of one of the vehicles lost control and struck a median, causing his vehicle to leave the roadway and ejecting him from the vehicle.

That driver has been identified as 26-year-old Travis Roberson, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers say an unidentified 16-year-old passenger was wearing her seat belt and received only minor injuries.

The driver of the other car involved in the race remained on the scene and has cooperated with the investigation.

Reno Police want to remind the community of the dangers and consequences associated with street racing within Washoe County, which can result in fines up to $1000. Additionally, failure to wear a seat belt can have fatal consequences or result in a fine of $78.

The investigation is on-going and the Reno Police Department is asking that anyone with information about this accident to contact the Reno Police Department Traffic Division at (775) 334-2141, or Secret Witness at (775) 322-4900,    www.secretwitness.com,  or text the tip to 847411 (TIP 411) keyword – SW.
