Short term road construction is popping up all over town, causing minor delays and reducing lanes. These projects are designed to help lengthen the life of existing roads.
“What you are seeing here is some pavement patching which is part of the preventative maintenance program, that's what we call keeping good roads good," said RTC Project Manager Scott Gibson.
Crews are sealing cracks to prevent moisture from getting through and they're filling pot holes to smooth out the road, and then finally fill in with slurry to seal the surface.
By using techniques like these, they can extend the life of roadways by up to 50%. To rebuild a road, it would cost between $6 and $15 per square foot. Preventative measures like this only cost about 50 cents per square foot.
The RTC is required to keep travel delays below 30 minutes, so these projects are limited to just portions of streets to lower impact. Crews are usually only in one location for a couple days, then move on to the next site.
Drivers can expect to see crews all over town, but some of the big intersections planned are Vista, Los Altos, Del Web Parkway, Mill, and roads around Incline Village.
