Regents Could Soon Appoint UNLV's Next President

The Washoe County School Board voted on nearly $1 million worth of recommendations from the superintendent.

The district says they have spent over a month putting together recommendations to deal with over crowding in 14 schools next year and each school worked with parents to develop plans that were sent to the district for consideration.

On Tuesday, the school board approved plans that schools say would help them manage overcrowding.

The district wants four extra portable classrooms. State allocations would pay for one at Booth and Hunter Lake and two for Whitehead and Winnemucca. These portable classrooms would be $333,000 each. Two schools would convert rooms to classrooms for $290,000 which includes $250,000 to convert Loder's boiler room. Taylor would need a $40,000 computer cart then they could convert its computer lab. Four schools, Beasley, Gomes, Huffaker and Smithridge will have more team teaching and rework existing space that doesn't come with extra costs.

Lemmon Valley recommended that Silver Lake 5th grade would move to Cold Springs Middle School and Lemmon Valley 6th grade would move to O'Brien Middle School.  Lemmon Valley is one of two schools who selected for moving certain grades to different schools.

In a previous story we took an in-depth look at Lemmon Valley's planning process but discussions between teachers and parents never included grade changes. District officials say that's because decisions, like moving grades, impact more than one school, so they were not an option for parents to consider.

A group of officials reviewed each school's plan, but also considered district level options and a mix of the two went to Superintendent Traci Davis.
