Authorities have forcibly transferred activist Sonam Wangchuk to a hospital in New Delhi after his health deteriorated during a 20-day hunger strike. The strike is part of the Cockroach Janta Party movement for education reform. Wangchuk and others demand the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over leaked exam papers. The founder of the Cockroach Party, Abhijeet Dipke, announced he would also begin a hunger strike.
An off-duty employee at an immigration detention center in Colorado has been arrested for allegedly firing a gun as a protest was wrapping up outside. Aurora police say one woman suffered a gunshot wound Thursday night and is recovering. The man was booked on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault and other charges. He is employed by private-prison operator Geo Group, which is contracted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to run the 1,500-bed detention center. Police say the shooting followed a confrontation in which two women started an argument and took pictures of employee vehicles as the workers were waiting to start their evening shifts. Geo Group says the employee was placed on unpaid administrative leave.
A federal prosecutor in Texas has shared new details about the shooting of Mexican national Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by an ICE officer in early July. The incident occurred while Salgado Araujo was driving to a construction site with co-workers. U.S. Attorney Aaron Reitz says ICE officers were targeting two Guatemalan men driving a similar van. Salgado Araujo's family claims he was close to obtaining legal status after 35 years in the U.S. The officers reportedly believed Salgado Araujo and his passengers fit the suspects’ description. The shooting has sparked protests and demands for transparency.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shook up his wartime government, drawing thousands into the streets across Ukraine to protest the dismissal of his youthful defense minister, Mykhailo Fedorov. He was seen as an innovator of the country’s successful drone technology but clashed with the more traditional military establishment. The personnel overhaul, which included replacing his prime minister, could become a test of Zelenskyy’s political authority as Ukraine’s fight against Russia’s full-scale invasion approaches 4½ years. The moves threw Ukraine’s military leadership into an unwelcome crisis just as its actions against Russia were starting to bear fruit and came against a backdrop of Moscow’s unrelenting aerial attacks.
